Care Packages for Transitional-Age Youth

Marin 9 to 25, in partnership with the OD Free Marin Youth Action Team, launched an exciting new initiative this year designed to help transitional-age youth (TAY) in Marin. Practical supplies (and some fun ones too) were gathered and packed into unique care packages and then given away to youth in foster-care as well as to unhoused and precariously housed youth across the County. The supplies were delivered in reusable canvas totes, as a practical and discreet way to provide these basic necessities, including first aid kits and harm reduction resources.

This effort was born out of the work of their 2025 Summer Interns who solicited direct feedback from their peers about what items would be most helpful given the realities of their living situations. Knowing that there is a strong correlation between housing instability, substance use, and overdose risk – especially among TAY making access to harm reduction tools and supportive resources became a priority for the interns to focus on supporting the TAY population.

The care packages included overdose prevention supplies, naloxone and fentanyl test strips, along with other items that support daily stability and safety (such as, hydration packs, bandaids, mental health and crisis resources, and basic necessities). Each package also included a ‘Caring Card’ (handwritten words of encouragement and support from youth for youth), providing contact information for vital local resources, including crisis and mental health support. The totes were distributed by community partners who already worked closely with unhoused and at-risk youth, helping ensure the supplies reached the young people who may not otherwise access traditional services.

The initial pilot planned for 100 care packages, but due to strong interest and clear need, nearly twice that number were requested keeping this initiative ongoing. Current distribution partners include Marin Foster Care Association; St. Vincent’s TAY Bridge Housing Program; Opening the World; Marin Community School; Community Action Marin; Side by Side (TAY Space); Marin Community Cooperation Team; Homeward Bound of Marin; and Adopt a Family of Marin.

Moving forward, the goal is to prepare these care packages annually or bi-annually and to strengthen partnerships that can help expand reach and secure the needed supplies. The scope of distribution may also expand as additional residents or populations in need are identified who may benefit from these types of care packages.
